California signs deal with engine makers to reduce air pollution from trucks

California signs deal with engine makers to reduce air pollution from trucks California air regulators and major engine manufacturers announced a deal Thursday to lock in place the state’s tough emissions standards for trucks, including rules that prohibit the sale of new diesel big-rigs by 2036.Experts said the deal was a way for California to protect its clean air rules from roll backs if Donald Trump were to get reelected or there is an adverse ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. The deal also gives the industry a consistent target for its assembly lines to meet in an era when presidential elections and federal court cases can cause major, costly swings in environmental regulations.“It’s an insurance policy for the California Air Resources Board,” said Robert Percival, a law professor and director of the environmental law program at the University of Maryland. “And it lets the truck manufacturers know what the regulations are going to be so they have the certainty to plan.”Under the deal, California officials approved several...

At Home: Going from owner to renter takes some adjusting

At Home: Going from owner to renter takes some adjusting “Ugh,” came the text from my daughter, “I’m not used to having a landlord.” When I called, she unleashed a litany of frustrations: a towel bar falling off the wall, a ceiling fan not working, windows that won’t open, unsightly nail holes from the prior tenant. She moved in a month ago, and these issues still hadn’t been addressed.“I’m just used to handling everything myself,” she said, which was true. My 27-year-old daughter had just moved from a condo in Nashville that my husband and I owned to a rental townhome in Boston. Her prior place was in a 70-year-old building, so often needed repairs. If she couldn’t fix something, she handily found the appropriate repair person. She also could make interior improvements — painting walls, replacing light fixtures — without jumping through hoops.“Welcome to the world of renting,” I said. Most of us have been there. More than 35 percent of U.S. residents lives in a rental property, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In the under...

ACLU files suit against DC, citing ‘unequal’ police response to mental health crises Bread for the City has filed suit against the D.C. government for the city’s practice of sending law enforcement officers to answer mental health crises — a policy the nonprofit said discriminates against residents with disabilities. The American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing Bread for the City in the federal lawsuit filed Thursday alongside law firm Sheppard Mullin, said the disparity in how first responders approach physical ailments versus mental health emergencies is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.Susan Mizner, who leads the ACLU’s Disability Rights Program, accused D.C.’s emergency response system of sending “a police officer with handcuffs and a gun” to residents under mental distress by default, in stark contrast to those with physical health emergencies, who more often get assistance from trained medical providers.“The most effective response to a mental health crisis is to provide empathy, support, and a ...

(AP) — A Wisconsin police officer who ran into a burning barn and found three cows near flames says the bovines “made a beeline” for the safety of a pasture once he opened a gate holding them back.Sturgeon Bay police officer Andrew Crabb was nearing the end of his overnight shift on the morning of June 25 when he spotted smoke coming from a barn at a farm. He stopped, dashed across a field and entered the barn, finding the cows trapped and mooing in distress.“Once I realized what was going on inside that barn, I realized the gate didn’t get undone and those cows were not going to make it,” Crabb told Fox News Digital. “So I ran in there and got the gate and then got them out. And I didn’t have to really encourage them too much. They knew exactly what they needed to do once that gate was open.”Crabb said the cows “made a beeline” out of the barn and joined the rest of the herd in the pasture. He said the three cows had been kept in the barn overnight because ...
