LONDON (AP) — Mystery hunters converged on a Scottish lake on Saturday to look for signs of the mythical Loch Ness Monster. The Loch Ness Center said researchers would try to seek evidence of Nessie using thermal-imaging drones, infrared cameras and a hydrophone to detect underwater sounds in the lake’s murky waters. The two-day event is being billed as the biggest survey of the lake for 50 years, and includes people from around the world watching the waters remotely on webcams.Alan McKenna of the Loch Ness Center said the aim was “to inspire a new generation of Loch Ness enthusiasts.”McKenna told BBC radio the searchers were “looking for breaks in the surface and asking volunteers to record all manner of natural behavior on the loch.”“Not every ripple or wave is a beastie. Some of those can be explained, but there are handful that cannot,” he said. The Loch Ness Center is located at the former Drumnadrochit Hotel, where the modern-day Nessie legend began. James Maddison scores first Tottenham goal in 2-0 win over Bournemouth in EPL

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:57:30 GMT

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — James Maddison scored his first goal for Tottenham in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday that maintained Spurs’ unbeaten start under Ange Postecoglou.Maddison put Spurs ahead in the 17th minute with a precise finish and Dejan Kulusevski doubled the advantage with his first goal of the season in the 63rd as Tottenham followed up last weekend’s home win over Manchester United with another impressive performance. The team now has two wins and a draw under Postecoglou while playing the attack-minded style of football that the manager has brought to the club. Though with Richarlison struggling badly up front for a third game in a row and still looking for a first goal of the season — he was taken off an hour into the game — some Spurs fans might still be wondering just how good this team could have been had the club not sold talismanic striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the season. Tottenham dominated the fi...

Better since the break, DJ LeMahieu connecting with Yankees hitting coach Sean Casey

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:57:30 GMT

TAMPA — DJ LeMahieu appeared lost at the plate for most of the first half, but the former batting champion has shown off more of a vintage swing in recent weeks.LeMahieu is slashing .311/.423/.476 with five doubles, four home runs and six RBI in 30 games since the All-Star break. For comparison, the Yankees infielder hit .220/.285/.357 with 13 doubles, seven homers and 27 RBI in 76 games prior to the Midsummer Classic. That stretch had folks wondering if the days of LeMahieu’s machine-like production were over after a foot/toe injury derailed his 2022 season. But the 35-year-old appears to have come out on the other side of a prolonged slump, even if he won’t say so.“I don’t feel like I’m out of anything,” LeMahieu said Friday after the Yankees beat the Rays at Tropicana Field. “We’ve got a month’s worth of games left. It’s just continuing to move forward and continue to improve and be better.”LeMahieu spoke...

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich appeals extension of pretrial detention in Russia

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:57:30 GMT

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has appealed a Moscow court’s decision to extend his pretrial detention in Russia until the end of November, according to documents on the court’s website. The American journalist was arrested in March during a work trip to the city of Yekaterinburg, almost 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow. He is the first U.S. journalist since the Soviet era to be held on espionage charges in Russia. An order that authorized keeping Gershkovich in jail before trial was set to expire on Aug. 30. The Moscow City Court extended the custody order on Thursday by three months, drawing objections from U.S. government officials and the Journal. The court’s website on Saturday showed that Gershkovich’s defense team had filed an appeal. The court in June rejected his appeal of the earlier ruling to keep him behind bars until the end of August. Journalists gathered outside the court Thursday were not allowed to witness the proceedings. Russian st...

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — An oral surgeon was convicted on Friday of a murder charge in the death of his girlfriend who overdosed on anesthetic drugs that he administered at his Maryland home.Jurors heard testimony that James Ryan, 50, set up an intravenous stand to administer the addictive drugs to his 25-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Harris, who was found died at his Montgomery County home in January 2022. Ryan faces a maximum of 55 years in prison when he is sentenced at a date to be determined, The Washington Post reported. An autopsy found that Harris died of intoxication from ketamine, propofol and diazepam. Prosecutors argued that Ryan showed “an extreme indifference” to Harris’ life by continuously supplying her with drugs as her addiction and health worsened. She weighed 83 pounds at the time of her death. Montgomery County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Harrison said Ryan was a skilled oral surgeon who knew how risky the drugs could be,“And despite his vast knowledge an...
