A small company from Newport Beach, California is working to launch a nightly first-class passenger train service between Los Angeles and San Francisco, SFGate reported. The company, Dreamstar Lines Inc., told the publication that it's working on “lining up the railcars, financing, staffing and agreements needed to offer the first night train on the route in decades.”Dreamstar Lines Inc. is in talks with Union Pacific and Metrolink, who own or control a portion of the 470-mile route. Union Pacific Railroad Co. and Metrolink confirmed to KTLA that they are in communication with Dream Lines Inc.KTLA has reached out to Dream Lines Inc. regarding the train proposal but has not heard back at this time. While many Californians opt to drive or fly between the two cities, Dreamstar founder and adviser Tom Eastmond told the publication that the new service would “annihilate distance through slumber” by allowing travelers to sleep in private rooms as the train travels to San Francisco.SFGate r...Commuter train routes between O.C. and San Diego resume over repaired track

Commuter train routes between Orange County and San Diego have resumed Monday after repairs to the track.During the six-month long repairs, frustrated commuters had to get off the train at the Irvine Metrolink station, take a bus to Oceanside and get back on the train to get further south.Last summer, a section of train tracks in San Clemente was shut down due to stabilization issues. “Emergency repair work had to be done in order to stabilize the tracks and make sure there is no movement in the track itself,” Jason Jewell, managing director of the Lossan Rail Corridor Agency, said. The work affected Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passengers. In February the tracks were considered stable enough to resume weekend service, months ahead of the weekday service resuming Monday. As part of this reopening, Amtrak is offering a 30% discount on the Pacific Surfliner route. To use it, you have to buy the tickets this week and use them by the end of May.Mods, Queens and 2manydjs at Coachella

Mods, Queens and 2manydjs at Coachella: Cynics might say that a Coachella crowd needs to listen to Nottingham, England, band the Sleaford Mods. They might say that this is the perfect crowd to be faced with the Mods’ tunes mocking bands that try too hard (“DIWhy”) and trendy culture (“So Trendy”). Sadly, they didn’t play the former on Sunday but they did play the latter. They were superb. Anti-tory, pro-labor and swimming in punk-poetry, the Mods’ set was a resounding success. There are elements of a contemporary John Cooper Clarke about the vocal delivery and lyrics, and that’s no bad thing. After the glory of Angele on Friday, we were happy to hear some more French language music. Christine & the Queens‘ style is very different — far darker and introspective — but no less memorable. The songs are half and half-ish French/English, and that works too.“[My] first Coachella was very impressive, quite a mileston...Stabbing victim left outside Oakland hospital

AKRON, Ohio — Eight police officers who fired dozens of rounds at Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, following a car and foot chase will not face criminal charges in his death because a grand jury declined to indict them, Ohio’s attorney general announced Monday.Walker’s death last June sparked protests in Akron after police released body camera footage showing him dying in a hail of gunfire. Police said he had refused to stop when they tried to pull him over for minor equipment and traffic violations, though they haven’t specified further. Police say Walker fired a shot from his car 40 seconds into the pursuit.Officers chased the car on a freeway and city streets until Walker bailed from the still-moving vehicle, ignored officers’ commands and ran into a parking lot where he was killed while wearing a ski mask, body cam video showed. Authorities said he represented a “deadly threat.” A handgun, a loaded magazine and a wedding ring were found on the driver’s seat of his car.Wa...Murder trial of reputed Oakland gang member delayed amid dispute over judge

The murder trial for a reputed Oakland gang member — a trial that was nearly called off, after Alameda County’s district attorney offered a controversial plea deal, later rejected by a judge — was delayed Monday amid a dispute over who will preside over the case. The decision to postpone the trial of Delonzo Logwood, 32, came after the Alameda County Superior Court judge overseeing his case, Mark McCannon, opted to have another judge from elsewhere in California decide on whether he should remain on the bench for Logwood’s trial.McCannon’s role came under fire from newly-elected District Attorney Pamela Price after he criticized and rejected a plea deal Price had offered and Logwood had rejected. The deal would have dismissed charges in two of the killings while capping prison time at 15 years for the third.Price’s approach to criminal justice and high-level murder prosecutions has gained widespread attention; the county’s top prosecutor has said she intends to purs...Best Online Casino Promo Codes in 2023: Updated List of Casino Promo Code Offers

The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention. (WTOP/John Domen)In the fashion world, Ralph Lauren is a world-class brand. A new cancer treatment center bearing his name in D.C.’s Navy Yard neighborhood hopes to build off that brand recognition, but with fewer barriers. The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention sits on New Jersey Avenue SE, just a block north of the Green Line’s Navy Yard stop, and it’s partnered with Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center to bring the sort of treatments and options to residents on the east side of the city who don’t have the same access others do.“When you look at some of the major chronic diseases and illnesses, the morbidity levels for residents, especially in Ward 8, are sometimes three, four and five times higher than what you see in other parts of the city. It’s really shocking,” said Wayne Turnage, D.C.’s Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, who was there to help cut t...Oklahoma officials accused of talk of killing journalists

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma’s governor is seeking the resignation of four county officials after a newspaper’s audio recording apparently captured some of them complaining about two of the paper’s journalists and knowing hit men and where two holes are dug.A portion of the recording was released by the paper, and it also appears to capture one of the four making racist comments about Black people.Gov. Kevin Stitt said Sunday he was seeking the resignations of McCurtain County Sheriff Kevin Clardy and three other county officials: sheriff’s Capt. Alicia Manning, District 2 Commissioner Mark Jennings and Jail Administrator Larry Hendrix.“I am both appalled and disheartened to hear of the horrid comments made by officials in McCurtain County,” Stitt said in a statement. “There is simply no place for such hateful rhetoric in the state of Oklahoma, especially by those that serve to represent the community through their respective office.”The McCurtain Gazette-Ne...Ben & Jerry’s workers announce plan to unionize in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — About 40 workers at the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop in the Vermont city where the company was founded announced Monday that they plan to form a union. “Collectively, we have come to embody Ben and Jerry’s slogan of ‘peace, love, and ice cream,’” they said they wrote to management. The so-called scoopers at the Burlington, Vt., shop said they have formed an organizing committee and petitioned the National Labor Relations Board for an election. They said they have the support of the upstate New York & Vermont chapter of Workers United, the union that started the Starbucks unionization campaign in Buffalo, New York. “I think of this union as a sign of respect for Ben & Jerry’s,” said Rebeka Mendelsohn, a shift manager and catering lead, in a statement. “We’re a company that stands for social justice rights and equity, and I want to ensure that this message is translated to all levels of employment.”Ben & Jerry’s, now owned by consumer ...Latest news
