They were designed to be safer: How de-horned cows created at UC Davis were doomed

Every year, millions of beef cattle are born without horns, a trait that naturally emerged in Scottish pastures in the 16th century and has since spared many lives from goring. But when UC Davis created horn-free dairy cattle — through gene-editing, rather than generations of routine breeding — federal regulators did not welcome the new bovines to the herd.Under rigorous federal rules established in the early years of the genomic revolution, and upheld during the Obama administration, genetically modified animals are considered to be a new type of veterinary pharmaceutical, needing FDA approval. Without it, meat and milk can’t enter the food supply. As a result, the nine cows — and the experiment — are now dead, burned, at a cost of $1,200 each.“It was a waste. There wasn’t any risk,” said animal geneticist and professor Alison Van Eenennaam of UC Davis, who spent seven years on the project. “Basically, they were an unapproved drug.”In this July 11, 2018 photo, animal geneticis...One injured in Memorial Day shooting near Luma Hotel

PARIS (AP) — Two years ago at the French Open, Barbora Krejcikova arrived relatively unknown and relatively unaccomplished — and left with championships in both singles and doubles, something no woman had done at Roland Garros in more than 20 years.A year ago at the French Open, Krejcikova came in after three months off because of an elbow injury and her title defense in singles ended with a first-round loss, only the third ever by the previous year’s champion in more than a half-century of the Open era.And then her title defense in doubles ended before that event began thanks to a positive test for COVID-19, which hit her so hard she didn’t get out of bed for four days.As Krejcikova prepared to return to action in Paris on Tuesday, facing Lesia Tsurenko at Court 7, this much was clear in her mind: She does not want to dwell on what happened in Paris either of the past two years.“It all happened, but I’m definitely not thinking about it anymore,” Krejcikova said in an interview with...Vuelca una embarcación turística en el lago Mayor de Italia: hay al menos cuatro muertos

The Panthers’ fanbase has not been this excited since the days of Beazer and Company who had it raining rats at the old Miami Arena during the Cats’ first Stanley Cup run back in the 90s. 7News’s Mike DiPasquale spoke to some of those players to ask how the current team is similar to theirs. It’s been 27 years since the Panthers last made the ‘Chase for the Cup.’ “This team is writing their own destiny,” said Billy Lindsay. You can see that with this team.”John Vanbiesbrouck, a former Panthers goalie, said the team has to ...Political uproar in Poland after Duda pledges to sign Kremlin commission law

WARSAW — Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said Monday he will sign into law a controversial bill creating a commission to investigate Russian influence on Polish politics that could ban people from public office for a decade.Duda and the Law and Justice (PiS) party government say it’s an effort to root out the Kremlin’s agents in Poland, but the opposition warns the commission is aimed at harassing political rivals — especially Donald Tusk, a former prime minister and European Council president who heads the opposition Civic Platform party — ahead of this fall’s pivotal parliamentary election. The decision is likely to worsen already fraught relations between Warsaw and Brussels, with the European Commission freezing billions in EU pandemic recovery cash over worries the Polish government is backsliding on the bloc’s democratic principles. The commission law was narrowly approved by the Polish parliament late Friday after a heated debate; Dud...Latest news
