Get ready to celebrate the 408 at San Jose Day this weekend

I used to worry that nobody loved San Jose the way they did when I was a kid in the 1970s and ’80s, and that all the time we spend online left people with less of a connection to where they lived. Those of us who did love San Jose were getting gray and sometimes even our passion was cooling a bit.It turns out there’s no real need to worry, and one of the reasons is San Jose Day. You may not have heard about this, but there’s a huge, free event on Saturday — 4/08 on your calendar — at the Mexican Heritage Plaza to celebrate. It’ll have food trucks, live music, craft vendors, an art gallery and a car show. It’s everything San Joseans love besides orange sauce, swirls at Aqui and complaining about San Jose. What I really like about this event is who is putting it together. The eclectic collective behind San Jose Day is led by Haley Cardamon, Alejandro Berber, Jorge “J. Duh” Camacho, Carman Gaines, Patricia Stokes and Esther Young.Th...Santa Clara considering legal action against 49ers over withholding 2026 FIFA World Cup documents

Santa Clara is considering legal action against the 49ers management company, claiming the agency hasn’t turned over critical information to help the city prepare to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Last June, FIFA announced Levi’s Stadium would be one of 16 U.S. venues to host the 2026 World Cup. But at this week’s Santa Clara City Council meeting, Mayor Lisa Gillmor said the 49ers — who manage non-NFL events at the city-owned stadium — failed to meet a Feb. 1 deadline set by the Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury to provide the city with key documents related to the 2026 World Cup.With three years to go before the major event comes to Santa Clara, the council is considering subpoenaing the 49ers or using other legal methods to pry the documents loose if they can’t obtain them in the next month or so.While the team did turn over some documents, Gillmor said they didn’t include information about the city’s requirements.“Other commun...Pleasant Hill shooting victim remembered as 'big guy with a big heart'

Students protesting gun violence in Colorado are on the radar of the state’s intelligence command center, which issued a bulletin yesterday notifying authorities of “a planned nationwide school walkout … in protest of gun violence,” according to a copy of the document obtained by The Intercept. Thousands of Colorado students were expected to protest inaction by state lawmakers by walking out of their classes Wednesday.“The Students Demand Action (SDA) has coordinated a nationwide school walkout amongst students throughout the country with similar trends to those seen in Colorado,” stated the situational awareness bulletin dated April 4, which was issued by the Colorado Information Analysis Center. CIAC’s mission is “preventing acts of terrorism, taking an all-crimes/all-threats approach,” according to the agency’s website. It’s not clear how the student walkouts relate to this mission. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson was ejected Wednesday in a 7-3 viictory over the San Francisco Giants after thinking he was quick-pitched by Logan Webb. The White Sox were up 2-1 in the third when Anderson came to bat. With a 1-2 count, he was in the batter’s box but not settled into his stance when Webb began his delivery with 11 seconds left on the pitch clock. Anderson stepped out and was already walking toward the home dugout when Webb threw strike three down the middle. Plate umpire D.J. Reyburn called Anderson out on strikes, and Anderson then turned back toward Reyburn to argue. Anderson pointed at his eyes several times, then shouted some profanities — apparently at Webb — from the dugout. He was ejected as teammate Luis Robert Jr. got called out on strikes. “He says that he wasn’t alert yet, he hadn’t put his eyes on the pitcher and he just stepped out,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Probably could have called time or whatever, but ...Deal to restore democratic transition in Sudan delayed again

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Larry Mize and Sandy Lyle delivered two of the most memorable shots in Masters history in consecutive years.Mize, the first champion born in Augusta, holed a 140-foot chip from right of the 11th green in the second hole of a playoff to beat Greg Norman in 1987, probably the one shot that haunts Norman the most. The next year, Lyle hit 7-iron from the fairway bunker on the 18th hole to 10 feet and made the birdie putt to win.Now they are linked again. They announced this will be their final year playing the Masters.“As they were in 1988, when Larry presented the green jacket to Sandy, they are connected again this week,” Masters Chairman Fred Ridley said. “We commend them for their fine play over four decades and for representing the Masters so well. Rest assured, their victories will forever be remembered.”This is Mize’s 40th consecutive Masters, while Lyle was part of the “Big Five” from Europe who once seemingly ruled the Masters. CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Top-seeded Jessica Pegula and past champion Madison Keys easily won second-round matches at the Charleston Open on Wednesday. Pegula, the American ranked third in the world, needed less than 65 minutes to beat Anna Blinkova of Russia 6-2, 6-0. Keys, an American who took this title in 2019, worked a couple of minutes more (69) to oust countrywoman Hailey Baptiste 6-1, 6-2 in the season’s opening clay-court tournament. Pegula said the tournament at the Credit One Tennis Center feels familiar to her since she used to train at the facility when she grew up on Hilton Head Island, about two hours south of Charleston. “It was a fun kind of period of my life, like maturing and growing into my career, and, yeah, figuring things out,” she said. “So it was a great time, and I loved everyone here.” Pegula used a strong service game and steady groundstrokes to win the first four games of the match. She finished winning more than 71% of her first serves and did not h...Latest news
