Parsing Agatha Christie’s existence in her home country of England 100 years ago is an obsession for those who buy tickets to the annual Festival in her honor, an event for glimmering tea sippers displaying earnest pinky-up energy. For an extra fee, one can opt into the deluxe “Murder on the Orient Express Package,” in which folks consumed with the prolific detective writer can snap snaps and instantly Instagram with the deliciously crafted, mustachioed confections of Hercule Poirot. Christie’s greatness, and an infinite amount of peas, are on full display here, the denizens of docents flexing their Christie bona fides incessantly.Yet there is one taboo topic amongst even those who can recite “The Mousetrap” at warp speed — the famed writer’s 11-day disappearance in 1926. In “Mrs. Christie,” now playing in Mountain View, one of these superfans is the gumshoe-obsessed Lucy, consumed with all things Christie. Her presence at the author’s hallowed grounds attempts to c...School crossing guard in Pleasanton hospitalized after being hit by car

By Jeremy Herb, Melanie Zanona, Manu Raju and Haley Talbot | CNNMajority Leader Steve Scalise is scrambling to salvage his House speaker bid in the face of an entrenched opposition inside his party that’s left the chamber paralyzed and without a path forward to electing a speaker.House Republicans met behind closed-doors for more than two hours Thursday, where Scalise urged his detractors to explain their opposition to him in front of the conference. After the meeting ended, Scalise planned to huddle with those opposed to him in his office, along with the leaders of the various Republican conferences. But the opposition to Scalise as the next speaker only grew Thursday, with roughly 20 Republicans publicly opposing him. Scalise needs a majority of the House to be elected speaker, meaning he can only afford to lose four votes. The deadlock is leading to intensifying frustration as the House GOP looks no closer to coalescing around a speaker candidate. Several Republicans described Thur...Kurtenbach: 10 thoughts on the Warriors, 49ers, Sharks, and baseball’s horribly structured playoffs

I don’t tweet anymore. I’ve been clean of that evil for nearly a year now. Frankly, I’m not sure anyone has cared or noticed that @dieter has been dormant. It’s been an excellent decision for my mental health, but a year in, it’s still challenging to re-wire my brain after so many years of pushing out seemingly any thought I had.I still have these not-quite-fleeting, not-yet-a-column ideas. So I returned to my notebook, sorted through the muck, and picked out my Kur-ten-bach best. (See what I did there? Please keep reading.)If you want to read Niners and NFL stuff — and only Niners and NFL stuff — just look for the footballs. Same with Warriors, baseball, and hockey. You know what sports balls look like. Here we go: • Sports bring families together. In my family’s case, the baseball playoffs have opened up a massive dialogue between members nationwide. But no matter where Kurtenbachs reside in our great country, we all agree: these baseball playoffs ...New Google visitor center just the place for Silicon Valley tourists

If you’ve ever had friends and family visit from out of town, you may have had to let them down easy when asked to “see Silicon Valley.” You would drive around to tech campuses where they could see signs for places like eBay, Adobe, Nvidia or Netflix. It ain’t like Hollywood, where at least there was a Universal Studios tour. And that’s one reason to be thankful for the opening this week of the new Google Visitor Experience, housed in the unique Gradient Canopy offices at the Mountain View company’s campus. There’s a plaza filled with Burning Man Project art, a 2,600-square foot gathering space called the Huddle that’s like the best-designed living room in the house of your dreams (which can be booked by community groups for meetings) and a Google store that has everything from Pixel watches to Google 25th anniversary bucket hats.Got an aunt visiting from Phoenix? No problem. Take here there for art, tech and food, all in one impressive...Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga questionable, others out for game against Lakers
