Durango river guide dies in rafting accident on Upper Animas River

A 24-year-old female river guide from Durango drowned while rafting the Upper Animas River on Saturday afternoon, San Juan County officials announced Tuesday.Just after 1 p.m. Saturday, Silverton Medical Rescue responded to an emergency alert on the Animas River, near Tenmile Creek.According to a news release from the San Juan County Sheriff, the river guide, who has not been identified, was leading a raft of eight boaters along a stretch of the river from Silverton to Rockwood.Due to the remote location’s limited access, two rescuers, a paramedic and an EMT, entered the river via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad with additional rescuers staged in Silverton as backup, the release stated.The rafting group had attempted resuscitation efforts before the rescue team arrived.The rescue team and other rafters involved with the incident moved the 24-year-old onto the train and transported the body to Rockwood Train station, the release stated.Keri Metzler, San Juan C...Lakewood police seek tips in hit-and-run that killed woman

Police in Lakewood are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian.Just after 9 p.m. May 28 the Lakewood Police Department responded a pedestrian being hit by a car near West 6th Avenue Frontage Road and Jay Street. SAN JOSE — Two men who operated a clandestine laboratory designed to convert liquidized methamphetamine into a crystalized form have been sentenced to multi-year stints in federal prison, court records show.Mario Orozco was sentenced to five years in federal prison, while Teodoro Ayon-Ramos was given a four-year, three-month prison term. Both sentences were handed down by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila, court records show.Both men were indicted in late 2020, and have been out of jail while their cases were pending. ANTIOCH — An online fundraiser seeking $30,000 to cover the funeral and other expenses for an 18-year-old woman killed at a birthday party shooting that also wounded six others went past the halfway mark to its goal Tuesday.Nadia Tirado, of Antioch, was hit in the hail of gunfire that broke out about 1 a.m. Sunday in or near a residence on Sunset Lane near Mountaire Park. According to police, uninvited guests arrived at the party and something sparked a conflict and bullets flew.Tirado died after being rushed to a hospital. Demonstrators are gathering at downtown Miami's federal courthouse ahead of Former President Trump’s arraignment on charges related to alleged mishandling of classified documents.
