(NEXSTAR) – You may have heard La Niña is over, and El Niño is getting ready to move in. It's one thing to understand what that means for our weather, but what do the words "El Niño" and "La Niña" even mean?Anyone who's taken even a week of Spanish class knows the terms literally translate into "the boy" and "the girl." But it's not immediately obvious what that has to do with climate patterns. The phenomenon's original name, El Niño de Navidad, gives us a few more answers. It was coined by South American fisherman in the 1600s who noticed the unusually warm waters in the Pacific that define an El Niño season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains. They named the warm waters after Jesus, literally the "little boy of Christmas," because El Niño typically peaks in December, around Christmastime. It's the closest a team has come to knocking off the Witches, who won their first three games by an average of 15 runs. After issuing a lead-off walk to start the game, Mullen quickly settled in in the top of the first inning, recording three straight backwards K's to get out the inning unscathed. Business owners in Glendale are fearing for the well-being of their establishments after a string of brazen burglaries in the area. A total of 10 restaurants were broken into between 2 and 4 a.m. Saturday morning, police said. All the restaurants are located in the vicinity of Colorado Street and Glendale Avenue, though some of the damage stretches for blocks and even miles further. Despite the tens of thousands of dollars in damage the businesses face, nothing was stolen. Employees of surrounding businesses say that this is not the first time that the stores have been targeted. 6 businesses burglarized in El Segundo “We are scared too, because we open at 6 in the morning,” said Seda Danielyan, who works at Sasoun Bakery, which is in the same plaza as two of the burglarized restaurants. “My friend was coming to work, and she saw the shawarma and pizza shop doors were broken, so she called the police.” Rockbird, a chicken sandwich shop in the...10 DUI arrests made in one night in Petaluma

(NEXSTAR) – When the pandemic hit, California's already insane housing market somehow got even crazier. By 2022, at least 13 major U.S. cities had seen home values go up by more than 200% – i.e. triple – since 2000. The top six of that batch were all in California. But the past year has been different. As the Fed has worked to tamper inflation, interest rates have gone up (and up and up), and the over-asking bidding wars may have reached a ceasefire. Some California homes were even starting to sell below asking price (gasp!) amid the cooling market. California homes are selling below asking price: Can you bid low? What happened in those California cities that saw their home prices triple in just about 20 years? Real estate brokerage Clever checked back on the data in 2023 and found that home prices there have largely been staying pretty flat. In one city, they're even going down. San Francisco, for example, had a typical home value of $356,800 in 2000. It shot up to $1.4 million in...Pollution lawsuit could curb use of aerial fire retardant

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A legal dispute in Montana could drastically curb the government’s use of aerial fire retardant to combat wildfires after environmentalists raised concerns about waterways that are being polluted with the potentially toxic red slurry that’s dropped from aircraft.A coalition that includes Paradise, California — where a 2018 blaze killed 85 people and destroyed the town — said a court ruling against the U.S. Forest Service in the case could put lives, homes and forests at risk. An advocacy group that’s suing the agency claims officials are flouting a federal clean water law by continuing to use retardant without taking adequate precautions to protect streams and rivers. The group, Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics, requested an injunction blocking officials from using aerial retardant until they get a pollution permit. The dispute comes as wildfires across North America have grown bigger and more destructive over the past two dec...Latest news
